The Discovery Session
We never ask.
We watch.
A 45-minute mentor-led observational session that maps how your child's brain processes information — across five structured segments, each targeting a different input modality. No questionnaire. No test. Pure observation.
The method
Why self-report fails children
Children can't accurately self-report
Studies consistently show that children under 12 have limited metacognitive awareness — they cannot reliably describe how they process information, only how they feel about subjects.
Questionnaires produce biased results
Most learning style questionnaires are socially influenced — children answer what they think is the 'right' answer, or what they believe their parents want to hear.
Observation captures actual behaviour
A trained mentor watching a child respond to five structured inputs captures real learning behaviour — not aspirational or performed behaviour. It is the most accurate method available.
Session Structure
Five segments. 45 minutes. One profile.
Video Observation
8 min
What happens
A short clip is shown without any instructions. The mentor observes attention patterns — where the child looks first, whether they track movement or text, how they react when the clip ends.
Mentor observes
- Eye movement toward spatial edges vs. central text
- Spontaneous verbal description after viewing
- Questions about what they saw (visual detail vs. narrative)
Audio Story
8 min
What happens
A story is narrated with no visuals. The mentor gauges how much the child retains, how they reconstruct the story, and what kind of questions they ask.
Mentor observes
- Accuracy of recall when asked to retell
- Whether the child closes their eyes or looks away
- Type of follow-up questions (clarifying vs. story-curious)
Hands-On Task
10 min
What happens
A physical or interactive task is set up. The mentor observes how quickly the child engages, their spatial confidence, trial-and-error comfort, and whether they prefer instruction first or diving in.
Mentor observes
- Speed of engagement — waits for instructions or jumps in
- Comfort with trial-and-error vs. need for confirmation
- Spatial reasoning quality during the task
Open Conversation
10 min
What happens
A free-form dialogue with no right answers. The mentor gives the child space to explain something they know well, then observes verbal clarity, conceptual articulation, and self-awareness.
Mentor observes
- Quality of self-expression and conceptual vocabulary
- Ability to explain something without visual aids
- Evidence of thinking about their own thinking
Reading Response
8 min
What happens
A short passage is given to read. The mentor evaluates comprehension depth, inference ability, and whether the child naturally annotates or takes notes.
Mentor observes
- Comprehension depth when asked about the passage
- Spontaneous note-taking or highlighting behaviour
- Inference quality — reads between the lines vs. literal recall
Your Child's Experience
What it feels like for the child
Your child is never told they are being assessed. The session is framed as a conversation and a set of activities with their new mentor. This is intentional — awareness of assessment changes behaviour, which invalidates the observation.
The mentor is trained to maintain a natural, relaxed tone throughout. The child experiences the session as enjoyable and engaging — not formal or evaluative. Most children describe it afterward as having had a fun conversation.
Session environment
- Conducted fully online via video call
- One mentor, one child — no parents in the session room
- No time pressure communicated to the child
- Relaxed, conversational tone throughout
- Child given full permission to say "I don't know"

Mentor note (private)
Strong spatial engagement noted in segment 1 — eye movement to diagram edges first. Visual dominance likely. Confirming in segment 3.
How the Profile is Built
From observation to VARK profile
Mentor records signals in real time
Each segment has a structured observation rubric. The mentor notes specific behaviours — not impressions — during the session.
Signals mapped to VARK dimensions
After the session, each recorded signal is mapped to its corresponding VARK modality based on the observational framework.
Relative scores calculated
Scores are normalised to add to 100%. A score of 70% Visual means Visual is proportionally the strongest — not that the child is 70% of some ideal.
Entry point identified
The highest-scoring modality becomes the primary entry point — the format through which BrainCode will first introduce every concept.
Pathway plan generated
The 18-month plan is structured: entry point modality first (M1–M6), secondary modality developed (M7–M12), remaining modalities expanded (M13–M18).
Segment → Modality mapping
Note on scoring
Scores are not absolute — they are relative to each other. A Visual score of 70% means Visual is stronger than Kinesthetic (45%), Read/Write (28%), and Auditory (18%) for that child. Every child is scored against their own profile, not against a population average.

Primary entry point
Visual · Concepts begin with diagrams and spatial cues
18-month pathway plan
Phase 1 (M1–M6): Visual entry, Kinesthetic development. Phase 2 (M7–M12): Read/Write expansion. Phase 3 (M13–M18): Auditory and full multimodal flexibility.
VARK Profile Scores
Percentage scores across all four modalities with clear visual bars and the dominant entry point highlighted.
Mentor Observation Notes
Specific behavioural observations from each segment — the raw evidence that produced the scores.
Learning Blueprint
How concepts should be introduced first, specifically for this child — visual examples, kinesthetic first, etc.
18-Month Pathway Plan
Which modality opens the pathway, which will be developed by phase, and when full multimodal flexibility is expected.
Home Support Guidance
Practical, specific suggestions for how parents can reinforce learning at home in alignment with the child's profile.
Before the session
How to prepare your child
Tell your child they will have a fun conversation with a new mentor
Ensure a quiet, distraction-free environment for the full 45 minutes
Make sure your child has eaten and is not tired before the session
Have a stable internet connection and working camera
Let your child know there are no right or wrong answers
Don't tell your child they are being assessed or evaluated
Don't coach your child on how they learn beforehand
Don't sit in the session room — the child should be alone with the mentor
Don't schedule immediately before or after a stressful event
Don't interrupt the session once it has started
Common Questions
About the Discovery Session
Can I watch the Discovery Session?
Parents are asked not to be in the session room — the presence of a parent changes the child's behaviour, which affects the accuracy of the observation. Parents can review the full mentor observation notes in the Learning Profile Report, which is delivered within 24 hours.
What if my child is shy or refuses to engage?
BrainCode mentors are trained to work with reluctant children. Shyness itself is also an observable signal. The session format is designed to be non-threatening — there are no wrong answers and no performance pressure. If a child is genuinely unable to complete a segment, the mentor notes this and adjusts the profile weighting accordingly.
How accurate is the VARK profile from a single session?
The Discovery Session is calibrated to produce a reliable relative profile — which modality is strongest relative to the others — rather than an absolute score. The profile is re-calibrated at M6 and M9 as learning progresses, so any initial inaccuracy is corrected within the first six months of the pathway.
How is this different from a psychologist assessment?
A psychologist assessment evaluates cognitive capacity, learning disabilities, or developmental concerns. BrainCode's Discovery Session is not a diagnostic tool — it maps learning modality preferences for the purpose of personalising the 18-month learning pathway. The two tools serve different purposes and are complementary, not interchangeable.
What happens after the report is delivered?
Within 48 hours of the report, the assigned mentor contacts parents to walk through the findings and confirm the 18-month pathway plan. The first formal learning session is scheduled from there. The entire transition from Discovery Session to first learning session takes less than a week.
